Engine blown, will 2.3l work in 98?
Was wondering...since the 2.5L engine in the 98+ rangers is almost the same engine as the 2.3L engine would I be able to swap in an older engine for the 2.5L engine? Or is the transmission bolt up different from the 97 and older 2.3L?

You can use a 2.3 motor back to 95,before that they were a diferent animal, blocks were different, oil pump in different spot, electrics different and some of your ass.won't bolt on in right place.

in CA if you swap an older engine it won't pass smog - i wonder if WA is the same?

Giant hole in oil pan that i didn't know about...was driving home at night and there was a nock that just kept getting worse and worse until it finally stopped when my engine stopped (Had no choice but to drive with the nock as i needed to get home and go to work in morning- ended up having it towed home)....can start it still now but only for a few sec and sounds like a diesel engine now. going to make sure and do a compression test before i go and buy an engine...pretty sure it's gone though. Well now that i think i about it i could have had it towed when it first began to knock likely due to low oil....(bulbs out in dash) but hindsight is always 20/20....

i believe national law won't let you swap in an older motor. same year or newer only.

found a few of the 2.3L's in the $300 range with real low miles
but there is a sale going on at pick a part that it's half off any part...so could get a 2.5L with higher miles for a little more....($325)
What's your best bet? is there any extra work putting in a 2.3L electric wise etc...?
How big is the power difference/gas mileage?

You will notice a little lack of power, not terrible but still there.I don't think gas mileage would much different.Do you get the complete motor at either place? The 2.3 would have a factory tube header that would be a nice addition to your truck.

Re: Engine blown, will 2.3l work in 98?
also another question....
going with the 2.3L because it's a couple hundreds in savings
there is one with 111,000 on it with about 150compression
and another with around 170k with 170-180compression
Which numbers are better? I would assume the 111k?
