Oil Burning - 4 quarts/1000 miles???
So, I have been changing my oil every 1000 miles (when the low oil light comes on) and only 1 qt drains out of the pan and the filter. What are some possible causes for the oil consumption? I have just switched to synthetic this past oil change, so we'll see how much oil I burn in 1000 m.

First thing that would come to mind is valve seals, but I'm not very familiar with Ranger engines to be honest. Check for blow-by into the intake/airbox as well.

Does your truck smoke like a bitch? Because you shouldn't burn anything CLOSE to that!

Re: Oil Burning - 4 quarts/1000 miles???
considering my dad is a engine builder and i have built my 350 sbc in my trans am....three things can cause oil consumption.... bad seals/guides, bad rings or a noitceable leak somewhere if your loosing oil that much....
does your truck smoke when you apply gas or when you let off the gas pedal does it smoke then or does it smoke when just idiling if so that oil consumption.. is there a puddle or anything on the ground....
.generally you would not want to use synethic fluid on a old motor because synethic fluids are much thinner than standard oil.... as time goes by and the engine gets alot of miles the regular oil creates sludge around the oil pan and gaskets and stuff as sorta of act as a gasket in its own.. you will see sludge when u open up a old engine... you will see how its literally baked on there at times....synethic creates virtually no sludge leaving the engine clean but when you change to synethic on a high mileage motor that thinner oil tends to break up that somewhat and seeps through stuff like that....if your truck hasnt used synethic in its early life and this is your first time switching it to synethic i think its a bad idea... so you probably made your leak worse.....
