Default Gasoline to diesel engine swap???????

You know, I'm getting so freaking tired of my truck. I love the way it haldles, the interior and everything but I hate the way I have to spend so much on parts and scans every damn time something's wrong with it. What's even worse is that I live far away from a decent garage and I gotta pay hundreds for tow trucks. It usually takes me lots of days, effort and money to finally get it fixed since I got no local access to help. You guys have been a great help to me in order to solve some issues in this forum, but irealize that from where you are, it is almost impossible offering the right assistance without being present.
I have decided to swap my computer, vaccum, wire and sensor riddled gasoline engine for a really old diesel engine. Something like a 1984-90 diesel engine. I gotta cousin who owns this piece of junk Datsun with a diesel engine and it hardly fails him, and when it does, he knows exactly what's wrong with it. After all, it has no wires, no sensors, no computer. Even I would know where a problem is.
I know it's no easy task doing that but I know it will be the end of the nightmare of having to deal with a problem that could have multiple symptoms as well as probabilities. Also, the old diesel engines are so much easier to work in.
I realize all that I will sacrifice swapping from gas to diesel ,but nothing can compare to the trouble I have to go through right now.
It's either that or make my gas engine vaccum, sensor, computer, and unnecessary wire free. If that implies switching to a carburator, distributor, points and condenser, so be it. Is that possible? If so, can anyone advice how to go about it?
If I go diesel, will any old 4 Cyl engine fit in my truck and work with my manual transmission? or do I have to swap transmissions as well?
If any of you guys know about sum like this, please let me know. I'm so fed up with my stalled truck. It starts but after a minute or so, it dies and won't start till hours after. Help me please!!!!!!!

My dad's getting ready to drop a 4 cylinder cummins in his '56 F100 big window. He got his motor and trams from a frito lay truck. I'm not sure on all of the details but it definately sounds like alot less hassle when it comes to working on it yourself going the diesel route
