Default Power distribution issues - how to remove power distribution box?

Hey guys,

1997 Ranger XLT, 2.3L/5-speed. Having power distribution issues. The vehicle will drive for about a mile and then everything will just quit. Only the dome light and hazards work. Removed and reinstalled fuses and it would start up again, then after a few days the same thing would happen. Is there a way to remove the PDB to access the wires and check for corroded wires/terminals?

What about items like headlights and horn? (Power wires are HOT at all times, not dependent on ignition, just like dome and hazards)

If everything that dies has to have the key turned on you may want to look at the ignition switch or the big ignition switch fuse.

Just trying to narrow it down before you have to start getting your hands dirty.

The ignition switch won't activate anything. When turned to ACC, nothing happens. No cranking, no lights in the dash, nothing. The starter will crank when jumped, but it won't via the ignition switch.

Negative. Absolutely nothing works other than the dome light and hazards.

You will need a wiring diagram to find the main source of power.

My 2002 2.3 Shows several fusible links, any one of those links may be causing you some problems.

I am not sure if this is your problem but it is worth a look.

They come off the alternator on my 2002 according to the diagram, if it is the same for yours they should be easy to check.

Ford used to have these links at the starter solenoid.

Either hunt for them or get a wiring diagram
