Default Horse**** mpg

1997 Ford Ranger 2wd 2.3L 5-speed

When I first bought it, about 6 months ago, I was averaging 20 mpg. Lately, I've been averaging about 14… Needless to say, it shouldn't be that low for a 2.3L.

There's been no change in my driving habits over that span of time.

The only thing I've done is replace the air filter and back-flush the cooling system. The tires were a little under-inflated too; filling 'em up should have helped, but it didn't.

Engine runs fine, nothing abormal stands out.

Yeah it's cold here, and the engine's being run harder to get through ice and snow, etc. But this started before the snow fell. Even if it hadn't, it wouldn't impact mpg to this extent. I'm getting full-sized V8 pickup mpg.

Something is wrong with the fuel system or ?

Tail pipe pretty black? I'd try cleaning the MAF sensor, check the o2 sensors, bad coolant temp sensor, maybe the thermostat is going bad and opening up too early? Another guess would be dirty injectors or worn spark plugs.

From what I have read the cold alone on these 2.3 lima's can impact there mpg this badly. I am only getting about 15 mpg on my auto.
