inertia switch

hi

I have an 85 ford ranger I would like to know how you can tell if the inertia switch went bad today I went out to try to start it all that happened is the fuel pump relay just clicked so i went on the internet and foud that you can disconect the wire and use a nother wire to jump it and the fuel pumps came on so is the inertia switch bad it did not trip i tryed to reset it it was all ready reset and reseting did not work. It only worked when I jumped the wires with a nother wire.
