Default Code po420

I have a 1998 ranger 2.5l automatic. This code keep makin the engine light come on, so I took carb cleaner and sprayed all the vaccum lines and none made the engine rev. It says it could be the the 02 sensors but I dont want to take a 50 dollar guess. The truck does seem to be running a tad rich ( the exhaust smells a little bit like raw fuel)

P0420 = low cat efficiency. This is probably due to old cats, not O2 sensors.

Take the cats down and look at them. They may be shot.. More than likely its time for new ones.

any recemandations on where what kind and the cheapest, Most important I dont want to have the light going off. My exhaust only has 1 cat as I can tell and the exhaust looks like it is stock. I have 1 o2 sensor in the exhaust manifold and I believe the other is after the cat. I really need to do a header back system. Single out version.thanks for the help

Do you mean 'headback' system?

What is the goal here?

You can prevent the 420 code with no catalyst at all. It simply compares the amplitude of the oscillations from the primary and secondary hegos and makes sure the second is a lower amplitude than the first on the rich side of nominal. It needs to be within a certain fraction.

Do the Evo/STI defouler trick. Pull the sensor out of the flow with spark-plug defoulers. I reccomend "HELP" brand 42002, or 42009- I always forget the part number. They should have them at autozone or equivalent.
