Re: Glow plugs
aren't glow plugs supposed to go 100,000 miles before changing?

More than that if the maintenance is performed correctly.

Re: Glow plugs
Where are you from (Country)?
Really you dont need to use it unless it is really cold out. Say like below 35 degrees maybe.
20K miles is really soon to change them. They are not like spark plugs that need changed every so many thousands of miles.

Re: Glow plugs
But why have you had to replace them so often? There is a problem some place in the system if this is the case. And if a mechanic said they need to be changed every so XXXXX amount of miles he is lieing and you should stop listening to his advise.
And glow plugs are not like a choke, they warm up the combustion chamber so that the compression stoke will compress the fuel enough for it to be ignited when starting.
How long does your glowplug wait light stay on?

Re: Glow plugs
AS Kyle said sounds like a mechanic is giving you the run around. Once you hit the ignition switch over you should only hold it for 2-3 seconds. That will be long enough to get it started.
There are some trucks that we service that have original glow plugs. They have over 100K miles.
