Default begining of a dream

ok i have the I4 in my 2000 now with about 80,000 miles on it. im now starting the long journey of turning my ranger into a drive anywhere beast and i have heard of intakes and superchargers for this engine but i dont know if it would be better on my bank account or easier if i just tuned up the engine instead of doing a swap up to a 4.0L.

the only real problem i have now is that im pretty sure my clutch is due for a changin.

A four cyl will always be a four cyl, they can be made to perform, but it costs $$$$$$, my cousin had those ideas about his 2.3, but after some searching and figuring, he just drove it, saved his money and bought a ranger with the 4.0 and the options he wanted. But its your call and only you know what you really want to do. luck.

you will never be able to make that engine into a beast, like the other guy said, it is a 4 banger and always will be. You can dump money and dump money into it, and it might get as much horsepower as a 4.0, but by the time you put all that stuff on it, it will cost alot of money.

You are better off dropping a 5.0 in it with supercharger and what not and then you will have that drive anywhere beast

A 5.0 swap will haul ass, and it's true 4 cylinders are difficult, BUT not impossible. Forced induction is always an option. You could run a low boost build on your motor or if you have mechanical know-how, you can swap inerds in it for a higher boost build. There's guys making 300 at the wheels for less then the difference of a 2.3 and 4.0 off the showroom floor. A good place for information is TurboRangerForums.com if you're honestly interested. I am a member there and I love the place. One of the few forums where EVERYONE is super nice lol. The choice is yours, good luck with your build either way!
