First gear hard to get into from neutral
I got my 2007 5-sp manual with 93k miles just a couple days ago. I like it a lot, but sometimes it's hard to get into first from neutral, as if there's something that blocks it. It's especially annoying at a stop light. I've tried pressing the clutch again, but didn't notice a difference. However, once in first, the shifter goes smoothly between 1 and 2 and back. This doesn't happen all the time though. What could be the reason? Thanks.

Thanks. Hmm... I thought it might be clutch related. Hope it's not a big deal.

Re: First gear hard to get into from neutral
My Ranger is a little "sticky" going into first too, but the clutch and master cylinder were just replaced a month ago so I'm pretty sure it's not that because it shifts fine otherwise and doesn't slip or stutter. How many miles are on your truck? Mine's got 205k and I always just thought these things happen with age, but I could be wrong.

Re: First gear hard to get into from neutral
Thanks, good to know. Mine has 93k only. Actually it's working fine most of the time, for some reason every once in a while it has that 'block' feel. It might be the way I'm directing the stick shift.
When I had a problem with the master cylinder (an internal leak) once in the little car I now got rid of, the engine would stall at a stop despite my pressing the clutch. Don't remember having any problems with shifting.
I'll check the fluid anyway to make sure.

Re: First gear hard to get into from neutral
No grinding. That would probably mean the clutch doesn't fully disengage?

Try going down into 2nd before going up to first.. I have always been in the habbit of automatically putting it in second as I'm coming to a stop.. When I don't roll up in second I do sometimes have trouble going straight to first..

Thanks, I ll try it.
What's strange is that there doesn t seem to be a pattern for this thing to happen. This morning for instance I started at around 32 F and it was shifting like butter. Most of the time it s fine.

Re: First gear hard to get into from neutral
I have read all the postings and I believe they point to shifter bushing are wore out but not so much as giving you a problem all the time yet.
