Arrow Coolant...arg. what is happening?

When I first got the truck I noticed that it was leaking coolant from the heat control valve... I changed that to a advance auto parts heat control valve and the leak stopped for about two weeks then came right back at the plunger part... so off to ford I went and got an oem heat control vavle... it looks like now it isn't leaking from that or the plunger part.. however not sure if this is related or not but when I turn the heater on it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't... I have had this problem since I got the truck from the previous owner... Anywho, I pull into the garage today after about a 30mile trip to work and smell the nice sweet smell of coolant in the cabin..

Open the hood and there is no coolant where I am expecting it to be via the heater control valve but I do see a couple drops around the engine...

How do I even begin to diagnosis this problem? I'd also love to get my heater working since winter is coming and I would love to get the defrost to defrost the windshield..

Note that even if the blower doesn't come on when I switch it to a setting or a fan setting if I have the temp control all the way up as I am driving I can feel hot air coming into the cabin.. But as soon as I switch the switch to off then I feel no air at all even when moving.

I replaced the rad. cap with a brand new oem ford one, and also the heater control valve.

Thanks,
-Nigel
