Not really familiar with the carbs from that year but older carbs had a bi-metal spring that operated the choke. The failure there was lack of lubrication and linkage wear.

with most carbs theres the choke spring housing. You think if i adjust that clockwise the choke would open when it warms up?

Can't remember which way to adjust it but I do remember it say richer and leaner. Leaner direction will open it up but it might be at a cost of poor starting characteristics. Try white lithium grease, spray all linkage and work it back and forth.

i cant even try to adjust it because it has rivets holding it in place not screws. I dont want to have to take out the rivets(nearly impossible without removing the carb) ill try cleaning the automatic choke and butterfly and all the connections with a carb and choke cleaning spray
