Let's just leave it at use 5qts the next oil change. Everyone and their mother has opinions about what brand of oil you should use. No sense in using Mobil 1 or Royal purple at $6 to $8 a qt, you'll just be throwing your money away at this point. You already have 129,000+ miles on it. Use a regular oil, you choose the brand and the weight, but use 5qts this time.

Now if you bought the truck brand new, then I might recommend using high quality sythetics. Sounds a bit late for that, but it work just fine with Castrol, Valvoline, Pennzoil, or even Quaker State. Change it every 3000miles and you're fine.

I can see using Mobil 1 or Royal Purple in performance applications. I use Royal Purple myself in my car. In this case, this is a 4 cylinder regular old truck that is being used as a daily driver. Kinda silly if you ask me.

Agreed. I just use mobil 1 as my brand, but as long as you stick with a big name you are going to get the same performances out of it. I just went through a class on fuels and lubricants for my diesel degree so thats where I have my opinions from. And switching to a synthetic anytime is a good idea. Back when they first came out 20 years ago no it wasn't. But the new synthetics are safe to change to in any engine including high mileages. But oil is oil, synthetic, blended or mineral oil.

hey does anyone know if you oil pressure guage goes right up after you start it or does it take some time? Because my starts off on the L mark and aftwer about 5 min it moves up to the middle. i am thinking it might just be the guage and let the squeaking noise go? and it has not done this until it has started to get really cold

I'm curious about the squeking noise. Could it possibly be your belts? Go pick up a can of Belt Dressing from the local auto parts store and spray them down. It's basically belt lube. Worst case, you're out $6 for the can. If it works, you have figured out your problem.

Try that belt dressing idea first. I would rather spend $6 and take the chance at fixing the problem instead of dropping $120 and not have it fixed. Worst case, you are out $6 and you still have to buy a starter. Your starter shouldn't be making any noice except when turning the key though. After that, starter shouldn't make any noise at all.

So is it officially your starter motor? Don't most places have a core exchange on that? Not sure what auto parts stores you have close to you but give them a call and find out. Or maybe you already did and $120 is the price with core exchange?

Yeah, I hear ya'. Try and stay positive though. If you bought a used truck with as many miles on it as yours, and all you have to replace is the starter, that ain't too bad!

if that noise goes away after 5 min. it would not be the starter. it would be something else. check your belt tension. you tensioner might not be good anymore

Ive always used mobile 1 syn. and use about 4 and a half quarts every 3000 miles and I would check that oil everyday. A buddy of mine that had something like this happen and a week later he was driving home and even thought his oil pressure gauge read normal he was running hot w/ no oil. The needle got stuck and he seized his engine so check that oil till you find out whats going on.
