what would be a good exhaust that would not make my truck sound like something from fast and the furious?

I have a cat back exhaust installed on my 98 2.5 4cyl. I went with a Flowmaster muffler as well. It's definetly louder than stock, but doesn't even come close to the ricer clowns with the big mufflers.

It sounds pretty good in my opinion. I don't think it's loud enough to get me pulled over. Find a good muffler shop in town and tell them what you are looking for, they can help you a lot and suggest a good muffler for you.

Depending on how old your exhaust system is, might not be a bad idea just to replace it from the cat back while you're getting it done. I think they used all 2.5 inch on mine. I didn't go with any shiny tip on mine. Just went with all new exhaust, flowmaster, and standard tip. Wanted it looking stock, plus it saves money by not going with some silly tip.

I also went with 2.3 headers that I found on ebay for CHEAP. Flows way better than the stock manifold on the 2.5. Might look into a high flow cat eventually as long as it's legal for smog in CA.
