Oh shizzle! Timing Belt snapped on interstate 94 2.3l
Hello everyone!
It's been a minute and I've been busy with a new job and stuff.
So I'm on my way home from the new job and the truck suddenly loses all power and shuts off on the hwy at around 70. Of course I already know what it is..... kicked in the clutch and coasted down off the side of the road. popped the hood and felt behind the timing belt cover and yep, it's loose.
So quick and dirty, what am I in for? obviously on top of replacing the belt, I will now be needing to re-time the engine.
Anyone out there have some success stories? I have a little experience with this kind of work and believe it or not i DID pass my state cert for engine repair. It has just been a while since I've done it.
Any info out there to aide in the repair? Mitchell talks about recovering refrigerant and all that noise and I'm not about to have the ability to do that.
Thanks for any tips/advise/resources provided. All info is greatly appreciated!
Wily

Re: Oh shizzle! Timing Belt snapped on interstate 94 2.3l
Planning to get a little prep work out of the way tonight (intake tubing, little things like that)
I'm watching the video the person posted on youtube for the 96. I've watched this one before and it seems to be a good video. He states he is removing all 8 spark plugs. Anyone know of why he would remove all 8 and not just 4 (unless he was doing plugs at the time too)
Thanks for the assist!

Make sure you replace the water pump at the same time.
You don't need to remove the spark plugs, it just makes it easier to spin the motor to TDC, then you will need to get your cam to the correct spot, that as well.
I said screw it, and took it to a shop, it was around 300 bucks, but I made the mistake of not doing the water pump, and it went out 3 months later, that cost another 300, it I would have done it when they were doing the belt, it would have only been another 60 to 80 bucks.

Re: Oh shizzle! Timing Belt snapped on interstate 94 2.3l
Hi Nibis,
Thanks for the info! I actually had the waterpump replaced back in January so that part is all set and good to do. I can't swing 300 at a shop and I like to do work myself (my waterpump was done twice because it had issues...)
I havn't pulled mitchell up yet to look at the procedure for timing but I do know about the timing marks. It seems too easy to just "line em up" and go.
Thanks again for the advice!

same exact thing happened to me in my 94 2.3. I went from 70 to zero real quick and with no power. Thats actually what got me into forums back in 06. here is my very fist post on a forum of any kind and it may help you fix yours:

I got the truck hme and took off everything needed to get the timing belt off...(fan, shroud, drive belt, harmonical balancer pully, and belt cover) then i got to the Here is the advice, and it WOERKED!
-to get the nut off the crankshaft, put the transmission into 5TH gear. apply parking break, and have someone to apply regular brakes (if no assistant available, block tires good), I think the nut on mine was a 22 mm, but im not sure. Then take a breaker bar or a regular rachet with a pipe over the end for more leverage. You need all the leverage you can get. I used a breaker bar with the 22mm on it. Stand on the passener side near front fender and with the bearker bar on the nut, have the bar over to the driver side as far as you can then pull on it as hard as you can!, mine started coming loose, then swoosh, it broke free, no problem! email me at dixie_boysles@yahoo.com if you used this information and it worked. goodluck!

Re: Oh shizzle! Timing Belt snapped on interstate 94 2.3l
4b316 and dixie_boysles,
Thank you very much for sharing the information. The link provided is a good reference.
dixie_boysles, it's funny because this is exactly the same thing that happened to me to the T! lol. Same truck, same speed, etc etc, lol.
I've seen a lot of discussion back and forth about the balancer on this engine. Some have been able to use a normal harmonic balancer puller tool and others have resorted to 3 jaw puller. I will be interested to see what I have when I get to that point.
My plan to today is to start that prep work I was going to do last night (didn't happen) and get as far into it as I can. I'm trying to have this done by saturday, I've already inconvenienced a friend with rides.
So, just to clarify. When doing the timing, just lining up the marks puts the cam and crank in time? I want to make sure I am 100% clear on that procedure before doing it.
Thank you everyone very much for the help. I really appreciate it!
Wily

Re: Oh shizzle! Timing Belt snapped on interstate 94 2.3l
First and foremost, go get a Haynes or Chilton Manual. As for the Balancer, mine just tapped off pretty easily. Its not on there like the one on my 4.0 SOHC. IF you do use a puller, do the right thing and use a balancer puller, NOT a jaw puller, you dont want to bend a lip or anything and fvck up the balance of it.
To line it up TDC, i used the markings on the plastic cover. I ended up offsetting my belt one tooth cause everytime I got it back together, it was always one tooth off. But your cam and crank need to be on their timing marks like you said. have fun

Re: Oh shizzle! Timing Belt snapped on interstate 94 2.3l
Thanks again Dixie! Do you think the Haynes or Chilton manuals would be a better benefit than Mitchell On Demand or Chilton Online? I have access to both as an automotive student.
I have access to an impact wrench that I am excited to try out. My friend has an "Earthquake" from harbor freight and for what it is, seems like it has a good bit of power. I hope I can use it to work on the crank bolt (have room to get at it) and see how much power it really puts out.
Thanks again,
WIly

Re: Oh shizzle! Timing Belt snapped on interstate 94 2.3l
Happened to my 2.3 back in november. Power steering lines may also be good to replace at this time. Mine were rusted and started pissing when I got the belt on. The other thing is My harmonic balancer didnt have any holes in it so i had to use a 3 claw. And as a reminder your truck wont start if you dont hook the electrical back to the alternator first. Good luck.

Re: Oh shizzle! Timing Belt snapped on interstate 94 2.3l
bah, thats silly. so 3 jaw it is for the balancer then. Lack of bolt holes on a balancer seems kinda "out of the norm" doesn't it? I've only pulled a couple but they all had the holes.

Yeah. I was pissed too because I had the screw in one.... but not the 3 claw. So I had to take my street bike out. On cape cod. at the end of novemeber.... It was F@#king cold.... and then the 3 claw almost didn't fit and I would have had to take the radiator mount out. but it fit. haha, barely
