Default 2.3L Duratec Rough Idle - Engine Codes

Can't believe I'm starting a thread on this, but here goes:
Last night on my way home, I noticed when I was stopped at a stop sign, that my truck was running a bit rough, but only at idle. With engine speed above 2250 or so it smooths out. At the time I didn't have any engine codes.

Drove to work today, on the highway it felt normal, but on the way home my check engine light comes on. Codes:
P0136 - O2 sensor bank 1 sensor 2
P1131 -
P0171 - Fuel Trim Bank 1 Condition
P0301 - Cylinder 1 misfire detected

On my way back from getting the engine codes, I noticed that it would start to idle pretty high at times, near 2000 RPMs, but then drop down right away.

So, after I get some "secure torx bits" I'm going to clean the MAF. I know that before I bought this truck (about a year ago) some work was done on the fuel system, I think more electronic side.

So after I clean the MAF, I think I might aim for fuel filter then plugs and wires. After that, I might break down for the O2 sensor.

Does this sound like the right way?

Alright. Cleaned the MAF, and that didn't fix it.

So I thought, well might as well see if there is a vacuum leak somewhere.

So with the engine on I started to poke around, then I heard something that sounds like a leak. This is either at the throttle body, or on the EGR tube.

I tried some WD-40 to see if it was around the throttle body (haven't had any starting fluid handy since I got rid of my 91 B2200) and that didn't really confirm anything for me.

I did notice today when I went poking around, that there was popping that sounding like it was coming from the intake manifold. So I think next up I will replace the throttle body gasket (to the intake manifold) and then maybe the EGR tube and/or gasket.

Also, does anybody know of any good engine component schematics? I was on Ford Parts and it seems like half the the drawings were for the 3.0L.

Before you start throwing parts at it...

Check your plugs / wires
Check the resistance of the fuel injectors.

02 sensor maybe? :P

Post the year of your truck and which schematics you're looking for and I'll send you a pm with the info. My ford cd only goes to my'08, fyi.

It's a 2001, and any schematic you have that you could send my say, I'd appreciate a lot.

Also, if the problem was the O2 sensor, if I would unplug the sensor would my truck run better at idle similar to if it was the MAF and unplugging that?

Once again, not much of an update.

I ruled out IAC after looking at other "rough idle" threads by unplugging it, and the engine dying right after it fired up.

I unplugged the MAF, this didn't change much. It was smoother at first, but after a minute slowly went lumpy/rough.

More poking around, this sounds weird, but it sounds like it's coming from my fuel line. Another point of interest is that the connector of the rubber line to fuel rail is just hanging there. So once my engine cools down, I'll see about reattaching it.

Dealership didn't have throttle body gasket. I might have them order it and do a throttle body cleaning next weekend. In the mean time I think it's seafoam + plugs/wires.

Seafoamed (not through the gas tank, I've done that fairly recently) then replaced the plugs and wires with Motorcraft brand on both.

Rough idle is still there but it doesn't seem as bad. Now while I am in gear and between 1500 and 2000 RPMs the engine seems smoother.

I'll wait and see if the codes come back and if all of them do.

There is supposed to be a kinda "vac" sound coming from the fuel rail. At least it's normal to me on my truck.

My MAF died without warning last week - typical symptoms - stalling, rough idle, no guts on acceleration. found this tutorial to troubleshoot it - big help - along with the linked tut on how to use a voltmeter to test the circuit - which allowed me to realize my MAF was indeed dead, and not just dirty (K&N air filter). MAF cleaner didn't work.
Replaced it and suddenly truck is new again - however, autozone gave me some more codes P0171, P1121, P0400, and P0102.
Based on the new knocking I hear, EGR valve could be a culprit.

Well, I replaced the Throttle Body Mounting Gasket, and the EGR connecting tube gasket, just so that I could confirm the leak wasn't coming from either place. I also cleaned the throttle body.

It seems to drive better, and only 2 codes returned (P0171 and P0301).

I'll troubleshoot the MAF next.

Check your PCV valve.

killj0y - check your PMs

Cdy291 - I have looked over the PCV valve and tube a few times. It seems like there are no leaks coming from any part. Also, if the records from the previous owner is correct, it was changed about 25,000 miles ago.

Battery went out on me Thursday on the way to work. Got that replaced.

This morning I replaced the fuel filter. Still have the same problem.

I'll update as I check things. First order of business is to get another multi-meter.
