Default timing belt

okay i have the inline4 and my timing belt broke it is a bi**h to get to wat can i use to get my crank pulley off

First make sure the engine is at TDC then you will just need a impact or a ratchet with socket and remove the bolt holding on the pulley

Rotate the engine so that No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke. Check that the timing marks are aligned on the camshaft and crankshaft pulleys. An access plug is provided in the cam belt cover so that the camshaft timing can be checked without removal of the cover or any other parts. Set the crankshaft to TDC by aligning the timing mark on the crank pulley with the TDC mark on the belt cover. Look through the access hole in the belt cover to make sure that the timing mark on the cam drive sprocket is lined up with the pointer on the inner belt cover.


Always turn the engine in the normal direction of rotation. Backward rotation may cause the timing belt to jump time, due to the arrangement of the belt tensioner.

Drain cooling system. Remove the upper radiator hose as necessary. Remove the fan blade and water pump pulley bolts.

loosen the alternator retaining bolts and remove the drive belt from the pulleys. Remove the water pump pulley.

Loosen and position the power steering pump mounting bracket and position it aside.

Remove the four timing belt outer cover retaining bolts and remove the cover. Remove the crankshaft pulley and belt guide.

Loosen the belt tensioner pulley assembly, then position a camshaft belt adjuster tool (T74P-6254-A or equivalent) on the tension spring rollpin and retract the belt tensioner away from the timing belt. Tighten the adjustment bolt to lock the tensioner in the retracted position.

Remove the timing belt.

Install the new belt over the crankshaft sprocket and then counterclockwise over the auxiliary and camshaft sprockets, making sure the lugs on the belt properly engage the sprocket teeth on the pulleys. Be careful not to rotate the pulleys when installing the belt.

Release the timing belt tensioner pulley, allowing the tensioner to take up the belt slack. If the spring does not have enough tension to move the roller against the belt (belt hangs loose), it might be necessary to manually push the roller against the belt and tighten the bolt.



The spring cannot be used to set belt tension; a wrench must be used on the tensioner assembly.

Rotate the crankshaft two complete turns by hand (in the normal direction of rotation) to remove the slack from the belt, then tighten the tensioner adjustment and pivot bolts to specifications. Refer to the necessary illustrations. Make sure the belt is seated properly on the pulleys and that the timing marks are still in alignment when No. 1 cylinder is again at TDC/compression.

Install the crankshaft pulley and belt guide.

Install the timing belt cover.

Install the water pump pulley and fan blades. Install upper radiator hose if necessary. Refill the cooling system.

Position the alternator and drive belts, then adjust and tighten it to specifications.

Start the engine and check the ignition timing. Adjust the timing, if necessary.

I did this to my 94' as well twice so i know how to do this!

First remove fan, its held on by 4 bolts. Remove them, then remove fan. the pully should also come off as well. then remove the fan shroud which if my momory is coorect is held on by two clips at the bottom and two 8mm screws up top. after all this is removed, you will have alot more room. now you will see the harmonical balancer on the cranksahft pulley. it should be held on by a 22mm (i think) bold. us a long as possible rached/breaker bar. i used a 3ft one i think. now put the tranny in 5th gear if and stand at the passenger side headlight. now turn on it to the right. it might take some force, but it will come loose! mine did. once you get it off, the harmonical balancer should be a little tough to get off. most people use a puller for things like this. i just took a regular hammer and LIGHTLY tapped on it till it came loose. then it comes right off. you may also have to remove the sensor on the balancer as well. next remove the plastic timing belt cover. i used this to time mine, so be carfeul not to break it. once you get the broken belt off. you should make sure the the engine is at TDC (Top Dead Center). there are many ways to do this, i just took and made sure the cam shaft notches lined up. next put ur cover back in place and then the balanceer and pully. i just put two bolts on in the pulle diagonal from one another just to hold it.also make sure the timimg belt cover is secured down where it goes. now turn on the crank pully until the little mark on the pulley is inline with the "TC" mark on the timing belt cover. once you get it take all the stuff back off VERY CARFULLY. you CANT TURN on it AT ALL! once you get it off place the get the belt on all the top pulleys then take ur ratchet and turn on the tensioner pulley to get some slack. then take place it around the crankshaft pulley. once you get it and you didnt turn on it at all. put it all back together with the exception of the fan and see if it cranks. if it does easily then you got it. if not you didnt. then just go through the steps again until you do get it at top dead center. for me, i had to offset the dang belt one tooth to finally get mine at top dead center. it seemed like everytime i cranked it, it was always one tooth off.

Ok, on my 93 4 cyl ranger i changed my timing belt and its missing. On my Crankshaft pulley there is a white pant mark then next to it there is a stanped line in the pulley. whisch is the timing mark to line up with the camshaft? i used the white mark as the cam timing mark has the white paint on it as well.

nevermind, i used a method i read about earlier. using a breaker bar and resting it on frame and cranking for half second. it came lose on first attempt. bolt is not reverse threaded.
