Default i think i have the mechanics touch, replaced thermostat and now misfire on cylinder 1

Ok, I feel like a jerk, I have been changing oil in the jobber trucks at a napa I work at. Well on the truck I drive I changed the thermostat because it was just dropping down to cold outside of the normal range. And this is an 02 ranger 2.3l, where the stat is on the bottom side of the block. So after it is all said and done and I slap this job all together (I'm not sloppy fyi, I used to work for furherstone aka firestone but that's another story), and I button it up, start it and this guy just spit and sputtered and was kindy jerky, I drove it and it kinda smoothed out but it didn't like any kind of acceleration or hills. Then ding the dtc light comes on, I took it down to one of our friendly shops and it say cylinder 1 misfire, nothing else.

So my question to the gurus of fords (if you ever need mazda help write me) is do you think the thermostat I put in was faulty, or is there some strange thing I should know or be weary of beforehand. The thing is that it was perfect beforehand.

Any help is appreicated.

I'm not too familiar with the DOHC engines that ford introduced in 2001 for the ranger. Is the thermostat close to the #1 spark plug hole? Some coolant could have ran into it and cause the misfire. I would remove the boot and shoot some compressed air around the plug and then remove it and clean it up (if you think coolant could have access it). If this did happen or you think it did you can try filling that spark plug boot with dialetric grease to create a barrier.
