I haven't gained mpg's from running royal purple, but i have noticed that i run about 5-10 degrees cooler.

You will not gain mpg by switching to a synthetic in any noticable amount. You might see a .001 mpg gain. The advantage to synthetics is that they do not break down with heat as easily as a blend or a conventional oil. Otherwise modern oils are just as good no matter what you buy. I abuse my truck. So synthetic it is!

2.3 synthetic. whether you will gain any gas mileage is open. I switched to synthetic oil in mine, and it quited down a lot. It is also smoother and runs a little better. As to switching to synthetic throughout, I haven't done it, but would deffinatly recommend it. I do agree.though.that less friction from.synthetic.would help with durability and a weasel of a bit of gas mileage. Also a wee bit of performance.

I swapped Royal Purple in my engine and diff and full synthetic DEX/MERC with Lucas in my trans on my 2001 2.5L and it's definitely running smoother and more responsive, but I I've only gained maybe 1 mpg. The reason for the mileage improvement is not that I'm using RP in itself but instead the fact that my truck had 173K miles on it and judging from the lack of basic maintenance on it when I bought it I had most likely swapped out the original trans and diff fluid from my truck.
2001 XL 2.5l 5 speed, 19lb injectors, 94 Cougar Resonator for muffler, Spectre DIY intake kit, Royal Purple in engine & rearend, Full Synthetic DEX/MERC IV with Lucas fluid in trans, painted rear half of frame, 3/3" drop, Bronco II rear sway bar, blacked out interior panels, pioneer speakers and head unit.

Basically you won't gain any mpgs by switching to synthetic oils, but what it will do is make your ride alot smoother in several areas. If you want better mpgs in your ranger you have a few options. The first will work with ANY vehicle and is alot of work in some cases: WEIGHT REDUCTION. Strip it down of things like insulation, stereo systems, swithing to alot of light weight components such as fiberglass body parts or if you own a bank, carbon fiber parts. But that can take alot of time and work. The other option is to get rid of it. Another option is to try and improve the areodynamics of your ranger by investing in a flat fiberglass toneau cover for your bed, but that won't gain you much at all. Just enough to notice is all it will gain you. If you're after mpgs, the ranger is indeed the wrong choice for your purpose.

Maybe if you used a 100% petroleum oil and went to a 100% synthetic you might approach 2 mpg, but remember, if you are using Motorcraft 5w-20 as recommended, that IS a semi-synthetic blend, so it is part of the way toward full synthetic already.

The easiest way to gain 2 mpg improvement is with your feet, mostly the right foot, as in keeping the pedal off the floor
