Now according to your calculations, did you factor in the trailer weight? I feel so stupid. Normally I understand this stuff usually very quickly. So according to the different trailers I put on this forum, would I be able to tow any of them and put a load in my truck bed?

You can put about 600 lbs in the 5x8 and the truck should be empty.

Alright, I got my manual out and It said my GCWR is 4800lbs and My Max Trailer Weight is 1594lbs. Now if we do the calculations that means:

4800lbs (GCWR) - 3280lbs (Curb weight + my body weight) = 1520lbs (What is this exactly?)

Now does this mean I can tow and load in my truck only 1520lbs?

The other trailer we were looking at was their smallest one 4'x8'. The specs are:
Capacity

Volume: up to 142 cu. ft.
Max load: 1,650 lbs.
Gross vehicle weight: 2,500 lbs. max.
Empty weight: 850 lbs.

This is our last option for the Uhaul trailer. We say last because we were hoping for an enclosed trailer to save stuff from the elements, but they have a 4'x7'8" utility trailer. It is lighter, but it has a higher Max load.
Capacity

Max load: 1770 lbs.
Gross vehicle weight: 2,400 lbs. max.
Empty weight: 630 lbs.
26 sq. ft.

"Now does this mean I can tow and load in my truck only 1520lbs?" Yes.
1520 - empty trailer 630 = 890 lbs cargo.
You understand it now.

Man, that sucks. Thats not a whole lot. 890lbs put into trailer and in the back of the truck. Huh? I think I can do it. Now if I do go over a little, do think my truck runs a huge risk of crapping out on me or over heating?

There is really no risk at all to your mechanicals as long as you drive cautiously and smartly.
If there is an accident of any kind that you are involved in and you are found to be over your weights, you could face huge legal problems.
It's kind of like rear ending someone. It is your fault no matter who else did what.

Really? I thought there was like problems that I would have with my truck. Nothing with transmission (standard)? Nothing with over heating through some mountains?

Tow ratings are pretty conservative in the US.

Well that's good to know. Well I think we will be close in weight that is why I ask. I think we are going to go with th 4x7 utility trailer. And pack conservatively. I think we will be fine. Thanks for all the help. I finally understand. I guess the max trailer, max towing, etc.

My dad used to pull a '17 Ranger bass boat with a 150hp mercury outboard with his '87 Ford Ranger 5 speed 4 banger. It wasn't the pulling that was the problem it was the stopping! But it worked fine...but boy she screamed going up the hills!

Reading this thread helped me a lot figuring out what I can tow with my truck too. Thanks a lot Twisty for going through the trouble of really explaining all of that. I may be wrong but it sure would be nice if Ford just had a single sticker that said "You can only tow X amount of weight".
