I am a new guy, I have a 1988 ranger that I have owned for 20 years. It has always been dependalbe and always starts. Lately the idel jumps up and will idel very high and then goes down again. no codes display and no one knows what to do. I need to get it smogged, but the idel will not let the test complete. I did a tune up, checked evrything I know of, any suggetstions?

2 things come to mind, idle control and the throttle position sensor.
You need to tell what the engine is. I am assuming it to be a 2.3, as they were very common then.
Let us know what you have, engine/drive train, and we will try to figure out the problem.
