Default Name that part - knocking noise

Hey everyone, for a while now, I've had a knocking noise going on on the driver-side of the front of my truck. I started rocking the suspension up and down and feeling around, and I came across this part:

Feeling around, as I rock the suspension, it seems like this is the source of my knocking. Both sides make the noise, but the driver-side is far worse. Anyways, anyone know about it, or if it's a common suspect for misbehaving suspension?

Knocking seems to be coming from the far end, near the nut about half way down. Of course, that could just be the vibration transferring through. Anyways, my guess is that inside that plastic cover is some sort of lubricated joint that needs to be re-lubricated... does that sound reasonable?

Thanks in advance!

Haha figures, I've owned three trucks in my life: a Tacoma, an S10, and a Ranger... all three trucks have, at one point or another, had this same problem. I think this time, I'm going to learn how to fix it myself. At the rate I've been going, its going to save me a few hundred bucks per truck I own.

Thanks all! I'll try and update once I get into repairs.

you will most likely need an inner tie-rod removal tool..........and an alignment immediately after the install.............also as a friendly reminder I would flush your power steering system on all your trucks........it is an often overlooked maintenance issue.

Very good points that are often over looked.
