Default Engine help

I have a 1999 Ranger with a 2.5L engine that just started running badly a few weeks back. It seems to backfires threw the intake system when starting it and when trying to give it gas to go. It also idles rough & seems to be loading up when driving down the road for a second then clears up and runs good for awhile. It then acts up again while driving. Any ideas as to what could be my problem?

i'd hook a scanner to it, if you don't have one, your local auto parts store should be able to scan it. If i were to take a guess at it, it's possible you have an issue with your mass air flow sensor or connector
