Default '83 Ford Ranger, Wont Idle?

Hello, I have an '83 Ford Ranger. 4cyl. 2.3L. It uses a single Carburetor.

When I start the car, the car seems to Idle high at first. Then When I put the car in gear (manual), the car looses that high idle and will putter out and cause the engine to shut off.

I have no idea why it does this...

I will then start the car again, and put it in whatever gear and have to rev the engine high and try to keep the RPM's up. Once the RPM's are too low, the engine will shut off.

I do not show any gas leakage.

The fluids look fine.

I have no idea to check for air line leaks... However, I show that they are all connected.

The engine leaks oil from the exaust manifold gasket, which i plan on replacing soon.

The spark plugs and wires were replaced about 6 months ago as well as the distributor cap.

Any suggestions on what to try to check?

Pour a.little.bit.of 90% rubbing alcohol down the carb slowly. After that check your brake booster vacuum line. Do you hold the brake and clutch.when you put it in gear? Does it die just by putting it.into gear without any gas?

----------

Also leaking oil.from the exhaust manifold? Do you mean the valve cover?

spray some card cleaner or starter fluid at the base of the carb...if it revs upthe carb to manifold gasket is sucking air

Thank you everyone. I took the carb apart and sprayed the carb cleaner in it which helped. I had a friend adjust the carbs for me and put a new gasket in. The carb is now idling The truck is running great now. Just need some snow tires now.. hehe
