Talking 2.3 L verses 2.5L and an eight plug question

I need to replace the 2.3L engine in my 97 Ranger. Will the 2.5L drop in without having to replace any electronics?

Second Question: What year did Ford stop producing the eight plug 2.3/2.5 L engines and go to just the 4 plug version?

I would like to know all my options when going to find another engine.

By the way, I think that the Ford Ranger is one of the best vehicles ever made.

Thanks for any input.

Everything should bolt in, but you'll have to use your 2.3 engine mount brackets on the 2.5L engine. You'll also have to swap over your fuel rail so you'll have a way to return fuel to the tank. The 2.5L fuel rail does not have a return line on it. I have already done this engine swap, i've got an 88 ford ranger and it fit in fine. All the electronic parts should work and to answer your second question, ford stopped producing the 2.5L in mid of 2001 which was replaced with the 2.3 dual overhead cam engine

Let me know how it all turns out. I have a friend that has a 2.5 L in a 1999 and it seems to be one tough little engine. We have used it to tow another Ranger back from Kalamazoo (80 miles) and it didn't seem to have a problem doing that (he has a class III hitch on his truck). I bought my 1997 Ranger with the intension of keeping it a long time. With this in mind I wanted to buy another engine and then take my time rebuilding the engine in it now. I have been told by my mechanic it has a hole in one of the pistons (he's pretty reliable). Anyway, if I come across a good deal on a 2.5L that would be my first choice.

Thanks, for the input, keep me updated on how it goes,

RR

Thanks, Shaun0204.

The Ford Ranger Forum is Great! I don't mind tackling something as long as I am not "stumbling around in the dark". I love this little truck and want to learn so much more. Guys like you make me feel more confident because of the knowledge you share with the rest of us. Believe me, it is much appreciated.

Have a good one!

RR

no problem, i'm currently driving the truck daily and it runs great, engine has good torque and power, very happy with it. It took about 8 to 9 months to actually get everything figured out on it.
