Default New T/belt - now runs crappy

Got the new belt on, fired it up and....ragged idle (not missfire), boggs down on accell., no power, loud exhust noise on accell.....timing off?

So I pulled the insp. plugs off the timing cover.....brought the crank around to TDC on Comp. stroke...looked in the holes (with a mirror)...and the stamped notches on the backing plates of the cam srocket and oil pump sprockets are both lined up with the triangles on the rear of the timing cover....so I'm good, right?

When I started doing this job, did a search and found a lot of talk about "diamonds, triangles & squares" on the cam/aux. shaft pullys. I examined the front face of each pully very closely and could not find ANY mark, faint or otherwise - only the one as noted above. Now my truck is in fact a Mazda B2500 (1999), but have been told that the engines are indentical with some very minor diff.

Truck ran fine prior to the timing belt failure...could be something else but I'm not a big believer " coincedence failures"... I did however check operation the MAF & sensor, IAC valve and EGR valve - all appear to be OK. Plugs are about 5K old... has anyone else had this happen to them?

Sorry can't shed any light on your tbelt issue, but the b2500 is exactly gthe same thing as a ranger with a 2.5.

Well, I guess I better end this thread. After much research outside this forum ( as you can see, not much help here) I was able to verify the following:

The timing marks are NOT the notches in the sprocket becking plates. Why they are even there I have no idea (except to just confuse the novice mech.) The marks are also NOT on the sprocket face - they are VERY FAINTLY marked on the backing plates. You have to look hard, but they're there.

Once I lined up the proper marks, It went back together & fired right up. Idled fine and accell. smoothly.

I also discovered the cause of my engine pinging problem - the exhaust side coil was breaking down at high RPM - replaced both coils & plug wires (at 175K it was time) znd no more pinging.

Hope this info. will help someone at some point.

DLT

Good job in figuring out your own problem...I am about to change my timing belt on my 97 Ranger...anything else I should look for?

Not reallly...just take your time. I found you do NOT have to remove the P/S pump and A/C Comp. - just move them out of the way. I bungee'd the Comp. so it wouldn't hang by the hose. I pulled 4 spark plugs so the engine would turn over easier when setting the marks up.

Good luck!
