Default 2001 Ranger blue smoke could it be a head gasket ?

new to the ranger world, just got my first one, a 2001 Ford ranger with a 2.3 Engine, it only got 108 K miles on it. It blows blue smoke, lots of it and burns lots of oil. I took the cylinder head off the car and the gasket, there was a lot of oil on the cylinder head, gasket and the block plus oil on the pistons. could be a gasket ? compression reads 180 on all of them. cylinder walls were clean and there was no groves or any scratches on them, how do I know if it was bad rings or a head gasket ? when I drive it on the high way there is no smoke at all. it goes away. I really hate to change the rings, I would have to take the engine out to get the oil pan off. any one got any ideas ?

Yep, most of the time blue smoke means oil is seeping past the rings and getting burnt off in the combustion chamber. Or, your valve guides/seats are worn allowing oil in that way. If it was a head gasket you would be blowing white smoke.

Is there a way where I can check and see which is worn ? rings or valve guides or the seals ? Id really hate to take the whole engine out just to replace the rings

Buy a vacuum gauge and hook it up to a point closest to the intake. A good point would be the PCV valve or Brake booster.

Once you do that, refer to this link, and pay close attention to Scenarios 4, 6, 7, 8, and 13.

Already got the head out and its swimming in oil, so as the block. I checked the seals and they are not that bad. So if I want to replace the rings, I gotta take the block out ? is that right ? 'cause the oil pan wont come out unless the engine is out. and to set the timing, do I need the special tool to do it or there is another way ? thanks in advance for the help !!
