Timing Belt replacement - ugh!
Hello All - newbie here:
Looks like I stripped the TB on my 1999 2.5 . I have done a few of these kinds of jobs before on other vehicles but I need some direction, if you please.
I have pulled the fan, shroud and serp. belt off. Removed the 3 TB cover bolts but it appears that serp. belt tensioner is cast into the A/C comp. and P/S pump mounting assy. and the whole shootin' match has to come off to get the TB cover off. Is there a shortcut for this that I can't see? I can't imagine that the engine was designed to have the A/C comp. and P/S pump disconnected and removed to remove the plastic TB cover to get at the belt that needs replaced at 60K! I loosened the A/C comp. and see a bolt under it. Is there some way to just loosen the big mounting bracket enough to get the TB cover off?
Would sure appreciate some help from any who have done this job before.
TIA, DLT

Nope, you have to remove the entire bracket. I undid the bolts and turned it around to get it out of the way. I don't have A/C, so I don't know about that but watch the wire coming off the power steering pressure switch. I broke a wire on it while turnng the bracket around.

Thanks, Sarge....for the bad news. Why they coundn't have made that tensioner bracket a separate piece is beyond me...or made the TB cover a clamshell that splits apart in the middle. Now what should be a fairly simple job is going to be a real pain.

Re: Timing Belt replacement - ugh!
OK, I'm back at this bad boy.....got the mounting bracket off after removing the A/C comp. and P/S pump...was able to move them both around enough to get the mount off without disconnecting/draining them...just bungeed them out of the way. But I have some problems:
Both the cam & oil pump sprockets have a groove in the backing plate. Does this take the place of any mark on the face of the sprockets (I can't see any) for alignment with the triangles on the back of the T/belt cover? That's the way I set everything when I installed the new belt, but when I fired it up to check, it started but stumbled, popped and had a tapping noise, so I shut back down - re-checked the marks - all apprear correct: cam sprocket groove (tooth) to mark - oil pump sprocket tooth to mark - crank sprocket hole just to right of keyway is lined up to notch on back of T/cover.....or is it supposed to be aligned with the hole in the rear plate just to the LEFT of the notch? And if I was 180 out, it woudn't start at all, right?
So I went back and re-timed the cam thinking maybe I WAS 180 out - but then it wouldn't fire at all - which is what I thot would happen. Put the cam back where it was before - checked to see that I was on TDC comp. Now it starts & runs, but has a ragged idle and boggs down on accell in neutral. Haven't put it all back together yet - guess I'll do that - put A/c & P/S back and hook up the serp. belt - see if that makes any diff...
TIA again, DLT
