its all in how you drive

i used to drive mine like a race car.....but gas hit $4 a gallon and i started behaving myself
i would average 19-20 in the city driving like a mad man (about 26 highway)

but after i slowed down...planned my stops....quit over revving...
coasted down hills....basically just be aware of how you're using the gas pedal
i've gotten it up to 26 mpg in the city and 31 highway (steady 70 mph)

i usually average out about 24-26 in the city overall now

just slow down.....don't accelerate like a pissed off teenager and time your stops
don't speed up to the light a block away if you see it turn yellow....

maintenance doesn't hurt either....
clean that air filter or get a re-usable one like K&N
change plugs and wires
tire pressure around 35 psi

people tell me "oh its just a truck".....my trucks are my babies, i take care of them, they take care of me
the people that bitch about their vehicles breaking down all the time are usually the ones who don't take good car of them....or they drive a chevy

Sounds about right - mid 20's is what i get hwy/city. I also saw a good suggestion on here about not accelerating over 3000rpm's on take off really helps the milage.

as far as maintenance gos yes it is important and yes it is dun wix filters all the way around and there all with in a month or to of being new. i just need a new carbon canister purge valve idk how much it will hellp but it is trowing a code . so i plan on changing it . as far as rpms go its all by ear/ feel no tak lol . and i am not really a agrisive driver . but i will try and keep the rpms down a bit more on take off .... what gear are you gus using at 25 2 ed or 3ed 2 seems to low a gear and 3ed seams to hi to me 3 or 4 for 35 seams to be about the same way .

I get an average of 25 on most occasions. I used to far over rev the engine (Thanks to my lack of a tach) but after I learned the right shifting speeds, I gained around 5 mpg, that and not driving like a maniac.

So true, when you go over about 3000 rpm's the mpg suffers exponentially.

I calculated mine. I seem to average about 24 and 2/3rds. I live in the country, though, and putt-putt around most of the back roads at about 53-54 MPH. You do have to slow down for 90 degree turns around the edges of farmers fields and the hills and whatnot. It definitely goes down in the city, and on long highway trips I've definitely managed around 30, before I put a canopy and mud tires on it.

I think...I think, and don't quote me on this, but the original specifications for a new 2WD day cab model off the showroom floor were supposed to be 28/31? But realistically, I think it's 25-26/28-29.

My 2.3 is rated for 29mpg highway... I'm actually getting 21mpg highway... how does that make any sense? I mean, I understand efficiency goes down as the truck ages, but its a 2003... not THAT old.

Mine is rated 19/24 mpg and is hitting it on the mark. I don't drive it hard, keep the rpm's down and anal about maintenance. i.e. change oil every 3000 miles, new air filter every 10,000 miles. Maybe a little preventative maintenance is necessary if it has been neglected. But then again mine is an 09 with 20,000 miles so who is to say what it will be when it gets some age and miles on it.

The way the EPA used to calculate those MPG figures was very inaccurate, and most of the time inflated well above what actual drivers were getting. Before 2008 cars were getting 30 mpg like it was nobody's business, but now they're mostly in the 20's which is more realistic. http://www.epa.gov/fueleconomy/420f06009.htm

I usually get around 20-22 mixed in my 97. I have new plugs, air and fuel filters, pcv and inflated tires. Bottom line is they just aren't aerodynamic

yea, i know what you mean about the areodynamics, When i come across the bridge coming home, into the head wind i can really feel it holding back this little 4 cyl.

Just found it - drag coefficient of .49. Wow not to good.
