Question change thermostat

Hi all. I have had my ranger since Sept 10. I want to change the thermostat, and coolant since its the wrong kind of coolant. But, I am kinda confused where the housing is. Its a 98 xlt, w/ 8 plugs (2.3l?). I know ford did something strange in that yr. The haynes book says it could be in 2 different places. The upper hose goes into sometype of plastic or something then into something else(housing?) to the block. But there is a cover what is seems to be covering the belt. I saw someone on youtube w/ a 95 ranger he had to take fan shroud off. Do I have to do that?

Follow the top hose to the thermo housing. It looks weird but that is where it is at.

If you have a repair manual why are you asking the question? Read the book!
