Hey guys, I have been trying to track down a knock from under the hood. I think it is coming from the top end, but I have had two friends with more experience listen and they feel like it is coming from the bottom.

How would you go about diagnosing engine noise? Stethoscope?

Where do you listen and what does it mean if you hear something?

Rod knock is most noticeable:
On startup - no oil to take up extras space then quiets down when pumped full of thick cold oil.
Picks up again when oil heats up and thins.
At neutral throttle (like cresting a hill). Accelerating or decelerating loads the bearing on one side. At neutral throttle its free to rattle back and forth.

A loss of oil pressure is a sign of bearing failure down under
