89 ranger will not turn over

Hey folks. I have a ranger that has set for a few months. Went to start it and I get a single click for something next to the battery. Charged battery very well and same thing. One click and nothing. Rig was running great. Any ideas? Thanks

Try tapping starter with a hammer

No luck. Would a bad starter only do one click?

Check to make sure that electricity is really getting down to the starter, if so then it is bad. Check your ground on your battery also

See if the starter is loose. It may not line up with the teeth on the flywheel if it is.

So I pulled starter and tested it. The starter motor spins but does not pop up. Is that a bad motor or solenoid?

either bad solenoid or bad test method. You said it clicks when it's hooked up in your truck. Yet it spins on the bench test. How'd you test it?

I hooked jumper cables to positve post and neg to housing then jumped between posts with scrfew driver.

Took starter to orielly and they saide it would not even spin. Put a new starter from junk yard in it and same click. Replaced starter solenoid on fender by battery and it fired right up. I'm glad I only spent 25 for the starter instead of 130 orielly wanted. Thanks for all the ideas.
