Exclamation problem diagnosis!

I have a 1998 2wd 4 cylinder manual ranger.
It runs well but if i find myself driving up a very very steep hill
I smell burning and experience loss of power. Some
dude told me that this because my clutch is slipping. What's a way
I can make sure this is the problem and not something else? Thanks guys.

I was once told to ease the front end of my car up to a large pole or post and stop with the bumper against it. Put it in first gear and let the clutch out slowly. If it engages and dies, it's good, if the clutch pedal is let all the way out but the engine keeps running, it's shot.
Don't know if that applies anymore...
Do the RPM's increase during the loss of power? If so, I think the clutch is slipping.

Sounds like the clutch slipping to me.

it's been a while since it's happened but I remember hearing an odd noise and smelling something burning. I don't remember what the Rpms did. I'm going to have my mechanic check it out, thanks guys.
