Hello,

I have a friend with a 2004 Ford Ranger w/2.3L engine that recently started making an obnoxious clicking noise in the engine compartment.

Searching the forum suggested it might be fuel injectors, but I'm not entirely convinced.

I've uploaded a video w/audio that will show you the noises I am talking about!

Any input would be grateful.

Sounds like timing chain or valve train noise to me. Does the noise go away once warmed up or is it always there?

This noise does not go away once warmed up and persisted after a 1/2 hour drive.

Assuming you've checked the oil level and have oil pressure, the next step would be to get a mechanic stethescope and find where the noise is coming out of(front timing cover or valve cover) and then dig in from there.

it almost sounds like your fan is hitting the shroud lol its just like an annoying plactic ticking idk what to tell you man it should be anything rattling because as you revved it the noise sped up and it did sound louder at the front like Martitime Storm said, id check everything you can before ripping it apart good luck!

Sounds like lifter noise to me, pull valve cover. Could be cam worn down

Any update on what was causing the noise?

Check under the truck. Look at welded braces that hold the muffler. If the weld is cracked, it will drive you crazy trying to figure out where the rattling is coming from.
