Default '87 2.3L Warm Rough Idle

Hiya and thanks for stopping by. Hopefully we can help each other because this seems to be a re-occurring issue on these forums.

Here's the skinny:

1987 Ranger 2.3L FI SOHC 4-banger

Symptom: Rough idle when warm [normal operating temp]. Runs fine on the road. At stop lights and such the truck will idle down like its starved of something to the point it almost dies, but will catch itself and idle back up for a cycle then back down to almost killing itself again.

So far I have:
-Cleaned and tested the TPS, EGR [solenoid and sensor] MAP, IAC.
-checked for vaccum leaks
- 4 main plugs were changed about 30k ago when my brother had the truck. he did not change out the other 4 that fire off of the exhaust located on the LH [drivers] side.
-new distributor and wires at that time as well
- new fuel filter
- regular oil changes

The truck doesnt have a MAF sensor per Autozone and All Data.com.

Also feels like the truck doesnt have the umph i remember it use to scoot around with.

Two other noteworthy things may be the engine does leak a little bit of oil and there is a good size hole in my tail pipe between the rear axl and the cab.

Is it time for me to start checking timing issues and maybe replace the coil packs?

Any thoughts or ideas are much welcomed.

Default Re: '87 2.3L Warm Rough Idle

Well I guess this could be considered solved.

I got the codes pulled again and it came up as low voltage to the EGR Position sensor.

So I picked up a new one and it did solve the issue of it wanting to bog down on warm idle til it almost dies.

The idle is now fairly consistent although still a little rough, but stable none-the-less.

The funny thing is I even cleaned this darn thing when I cleaned all the other culprits [ IAC, MAP, EGR solenoid, etc.]

I did notice the second time i pulled the sensor off a light brown shade on the internal point of the sensor, similar to what a screwdriver would look like after running a match under it; burnt metal.

EDIT:

I stand corrected, the new EGR Position sensor did not fix the idle bog down i am having. It did seem to help, but now after driving the truck for a little while at normal temp it reverts back to its old habits??

Any ideas at all would be most helpful and appreciated. If i have left anything out, i apologize, i'm still new to this.
