NO SPARK, 94 2.3L, Changed Coil Packs and ICM
Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a 94 Ranger 2.3L with the distributorless ignition. The truck ran when I bought it but the battery light was on because of a faulty altenator.
After replacing the alternator, a day later the truck died on me while abruptly stopping for a groundhog...Should of ran it over haha.
Initially I thought the interior fuel switch may have tripped but that was not the problem.
Checked for fuel and spark. I'm getting fuel (checked fitting on the fuel rail) but no spark.
I've replaced both coil packs. No luck. I also bought an ICM and plugged it in to the engine wiring harness and still no spark. NOTE: I did not mount the new ICM to the intake manifold because I wanted to know if it was the problem or not. I placed a jumper wire from the back of the icm to a good ground. Just in case the back of the ICM served as a ground.
Not sure what to try next. Any suggestions? I would love to know if there is Diagnostic Flow Chart for no spark for the truck. My resources are limited. Thanks

Yes, the battery is in good condition and the terminals are tight. I actually connect a jump pack to it while cranking so it does not strain the battery excessively.

do you have any signal from your crank sensor?

The only place the ignition module grounds is in the upper left hand corner.Did it quit right while you were stopping? All the rollover switch does is interrupt the fuel signal.Pinch a wire somewheres?Nothing hit the crank sensor?

Haven't looked at that. To be honest I don't have a repair manual for the truck. All Data wasn't much help. Within the next 2 days I'll pick up the Haynes or Chiltons for it. Not sure where to look, I'd assume on the serpentine belt side (front of engine) next to crank pulley. Also need to know what electric readings to look for from the pinouts.

Ok, I assume the ICM ground is located on one of the pinouts. Because the backside is a plate or layer of metal. I clamped an alligator clip on the backside of the ICM to the negative battery terminal to serve as a ground. Just a guess...obviously i had both wiring clips of the new ICM connected but I didn't want to mount it on the intake manifold if that wasn't the problem.
Yes, the brakes locked up briefly upon dodging the rodent. I was traveling around 35 mph. Clutch pedal was depressed, truck died immediately. Went to start it up again and it would crank and turn over but would not start. Same issues remain. Pinched wire is a possibility and I won't rule it out...although i wasn't traveling very fast...hmmm.
Need to find crank sensor location...and perform required electric tests whatever they may be...
Thanks for the help so far guys...Much appreciated

Crank sensor is right behind the bottom pulley on pre 95 2.3,s but you can check the signal on the wire plug right by the dist.hole.It might be cover by the power steering pump bracket or AC.Did you hit the rodent? You didn't break the timing belt?

i just replaced the crank sensor i my 94, it was behind the timing belt cover. you have to remove the harmonic balancer to get the timing cover off then two bolts hold it on

Just Sharing......Every story I hear or and have had about a vehicle just shutting off while slowing down (easing off of accelerator or braking) has been related to fuel pump and or sending unit.....might want to look into it....see if you can hear the pump running by turning the ignition to the On position.

I thought the crank sensor had a role in both spark and fuel?
