Default 96 crank, no start

96 2.3L lost power on the way home from work, check engine light came on immediately. Acted like it was getting no or little gas.

Replaced fuel pump (gauge said no pressure at valve - later found out gauge was faulty and had pressure at valve all along)
Replaced fuel filter
Replaced plugs (they needed it anyway)
Replaced wires (may as well)

Fuel is present through schrader valve at intake
Plug sparked fine on coil test
No air blockage that I can find
No backfires
Ran a code test but got nothing, probably because I'd had battery disconnecting while replacing above parts.
Cranks but no start.

Ideas appreciated; after a month of this and multiple difficulties with related issues, I'm getting terribly frustrated with it.

Yeah I was thinking a timing check might be the next thing to try. I'd considered a compression check but the oil and coolant seem to be fine and there's no strange noise or anything during cranking.

That, and I'm really hoping it's not anything in the head. ):

Okay so the timing checks at 11 deg BTC. I'm searching for specs now to determine what it's supposed to be. Anyone wants to beat me to it and post that info here, I'll be grateful.

One more update, and I REALLY hope this one nails it.

Decided to go back to the beginning and check fuel pressure. I get fuel coming out of the schrader valve when I activate it by hand, but the gauge tells me no pressure - none on KOEO, and none on cranking either.

At the 4-prong plug on top of the fuel pump, the green wire is broken, but honestly it doesn't look like a recent break; looks like it's been that way a long time. Pump is activating fine on KOEO and on crank. But still no pressure.

I'm thinking the relay must be fine if the pump is activating, and that this broken wire may be for my fuel level gauge (which hasn't worked in a long time). Could this problem be caused by a bad fuel regulator?

if the pump activates the relay is good. you are correct in that.

so the spark is good, right? does it start if you spray starting fluid thru the intake? try this, have someone sit in the truck and floor the pedal (WOT will disable the fuel injection system on most vehicles) and spray a few shots of starting fluid into the throttle body (remove the air ducting to gain access to it.) if it starts and runs for a tic then pudders out, you are probably looking at a fuel system issue. If it doesn't start then you could be looking at timing and/or compression as potential issues.

Give that a shot and let us know what happens.

Cheers!
Wily

Well turns out I was wrong - looks like the timing belt slipped off. Hopefully now everything will be good. Thanks for the advice.
