Question 95 2.3 in an 83... Please help!

I've already done most of the conversion for my brother in law, and it is currently running fine at idle, in first, and in reverse. He still has the original 4 speed manual from the 83. We swapped over the engine, fuel lines, and fuel tank, and retrofitted the computer in a weatherproof enclosure under the hood. I've got 99% of the wiring sorted out so far. We THOUGHT we were done until he test drove it...

Here's the deal: the computer is from an automatic truck, and there is no vehicle speed sensor in the rear end on this old truck. When he takes off in 1st, everything is fine. As soon as he goes for 2nd, the engine loses all power and eventually sputters out dead. Is this because of the automatic computer looking for a shift signal, or the fact that there is no VSS giving feedback? I would hate to have come this far to have this thing kick my arse now...

Essential to the computer? This is an older 4 speed with cable speedo...

This maybe unrelated, but I'm in the middle of a 2.3 to 2.5 swap.
I did notice that on the end of the speedometer cable that goes into the transmission there's a sensor. I have to think it was a speed sensor.
However, I didn't take note of whether or not the sensor was easily removable from the cable, or if it was removable from the cable at all for that matter. In any event, maybe all you need is a speedometer cable from a newer model with a sensor.
