I am not much for throwing parts at the problem but in this case I might consider a new key cylinder and ignition switch. They are both less than $20 each

i replaced the spark plugs about 11 months ago for a long trip (oklahoma, new mexico, arizona and up california to the northwest) i took. do you think they'd go bad by now? not saying i don't believe you, just curious.
should i jump start it first and see what happens?

the head lights still work.

thanks for all your help everyone!

It's a word, and that's exactly what it sounds like and I was eluding to before. But its kind of impossible on a fuel injected engine. On a carb engine where the fuel pump is mechanical, it would happen. But the fuel is cut off when the key is off so it can't actually do that. There are bits and pieces of several different possible problems here, but no complete problem. Perplexing.

1)it's not your Sparkplugs

2)Do you have any after market theft devises? do you have Pats?

3) have you had the truck for a while?

4)Dieseling is caused by carbon in the engine that gets red hot. after then car is turned off the carbon is still red hot and on the old cars with mechanical fuel systems the engine could feed itself fuel and keep "running on". As fireranger said it does not happen in fuel injected cars cause there is no fuel.....

5) I would consider the ignition lock cylinder (10 minute easy repair and less then $20 bucks) and or the ignition switch(most of the time an easy fix and under $20)it is always a good idea to disarm the air bag system by removing the neg bat cable for a few minutes before messing with the steering column

I agree. While nothing makes complete sense, the ignition cylinder is the only thing I can think of that is simple and effects everything involved in some way. Plugs that new should be fine and no matter how you slice it, they can't keep the engine running.

is it possible that the injectors are not shutting down after ignition off? I guess my thought is perhaps there still firing and the fuel is combusting from heat and pressure...?

Maybe we should eleminate that thought by pulling in injector out, start the truck shut it off and see if the injector is still going. Check each one. Just a thought, I dont know what would cause this tho, it'd have to come back to computer issue...?

With the key off, the injectors and fuel pump have no power. There's no way there could be fuel in the cylinders. Even if an injectors was "leaking", the pump is off so there won't be any fuel to leak anyway. And if there was, there is no way to ignite it since the ignition is off. I doubt its having dieseling issues at the same time as an electrical problem. The planets aren't that much in line.

That's why it seems the ignition cylinder is the common denominator here. bad contact could cause the rough running engine and prevent it from shutting off.
