Re: Problems with 4-cyl. 2.3 L manual
Take it to an auto parts store like auto zone to have the codes read and see why that light is on

If on top end more than likely a lifter.
Does the check engine light turn off sometimes and then turns back for for a long period of time?

Re: Problems with 4-cyl. 2.3 L manual
90% of the time the light is busted, short circuit somewhere.
Can't help you on the ticking but the O2 sensor might be out as well, just based on the age of your truck.

QFT! Who the hell claims a o2 is out based on NO information when the OP was asking about a ticking sound.

Re: Problems with 4-cyl. 2.3 L manual
So his check engine light comes on (hundreds of reasons why) and then a ticking follows (also hundreds of reasons). That's what I took away from the original post. If that's the order it happened it there should be no connection between the two.
Very few electronic components last 17 years and I've seen many a check engine light from a faulty O2 sensor. If nothing else putting in a new one won't kill you. The 90% is more of a joke against modern engineering then an actual faulty part. One light for any one of hundred things that can go wrong? A $30 LCD screen mounted in the dash could tell you what is wrong, saving you a trip to the code reader. But that would require an engineer to make a good decision, not gonna happen.

Re: Problems with 4-cyl. 2.3 L manual
I had the same exact problem with the weird ticking and my light. My light would go off for a day, then just come back on for a few weeks solid. The ticking was constant. It never got faster with acceleration or slower at lower speeds and it was kind of noisy. I didnt fix it because it wasn't, or so i thought, effecting performance. 2 weeks ago i pulled out of my drive way, 1st gear was cool, I put it in second and the engine starting bogging down very rapidly and now its dead! My advice, fix that tick now and save your truck!!!
----------
oh and I replaced every freakin external part on my truck, including the computer about 3 years ago. My light problem...no one could ever figure it out! It had always passed inspection. I always got told "Hey man uhh your check engine light is on but everything is reading good soooo I guess I'll pass it."
