Timing Belt Removal
I have a 94 2.3 L
My water pump went out, and I figured I would change the timing belt since it was still factory.
The thing is, I cannot get the crankshaft sprocket off. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Don't do that without instructions.

Re: Timing Belt Removal
use a puller. looks like you'd use a three jaw puller if your careful or you can pass some bolts with washers behind the holes in the sprocket and use a puller that lets you pull using bolts.
Mark and label em so they go on as they came off.
Hope that helps.

I cannot get the 22 mm bolt off of the crankshaft before I use my pulley. I have it in first gear with my parking break on and it just rolls when I turn it.

Re: Timing Belt Removal
thought ya said camshaft sprocket.
for the crankshaft you can hold it still using vice grips to keep it from rotating. they don't have to be deathly tight, just make em into a wedge. Just don't bend up the flange.

Re: Timing Belt Removal
yea that bolt w/o an impact might be tricky. the bump the key trick sounds like it might work. havn't done it personally.
In my engines class we are working on a gm 3400 engine. we had the oil pan off the engine so we just wedged a hammer to keep the crank from turning and got it off that way. obviously that doesn't work when the engines in the truck.
Guess I'm no help on this one, just sorta rambling. sorry

It is pretty tight. My ac line was in the middle of everything. I had to take the radiator out to use the impact wrench. This was the last thing I did. I would suggest doing it right after taking the fan shroud off, gave me more room to play, plus it was only two bolts and I gave the radiator a good rinse.
The timing belt cover was kind of a pain. I had to use a long screwdriver to get to the clips.
The TB tension spring need a special tool to put it back on, but I just used a prybar to hold one end of the spring under the bolt (this one is also holds the back part of the TB housing on) that keeps the springs taught while I tightened the TB tention spring bolt back up.
I used the same pry bar to push the tentioner back so I could tighter the tension bolt so I had plenty of slack for the belt.
Also the TC marks for the crankshaft are on the plastic housing that you have to remove...a stupid design I thing...so I had to wiggle the housing back on several times to make sure I had it right.

I got the truck hme and took off everything needed to get the timing belt off...(fan, shroud, drive belt, harmonical balancer pully, and belt cover) then i got to the Here is the advice, and it WOERKED!
-to get the nut off the crankshaft, put the transmission into 5TH gear. apply parking break, and have someone to apply regular brakes (if no assistant available, block tires good), I think the nut on mine was a 22 mm, but im not sure. Then take a breaker bar or a regular rachet with a pipe over the end for more leverage. You need all the leverage you can get. I used a breaker bar with the 22mm on it. Stand on the passener side near front fender and with the bearker bar on the nut, have the bar over to the driver side as far as you can then pull on it as hard as you can!, mine started coming loose, then swoosh, it broke free, no problem! email me at dixie_boysles@yahoo.com if you used this information and it worked. goodluck!

This is the thruck i done it on, a 94 2.3 reg cab:
----------
like terryduane said, if this method does not work, then wedge the breaker bar against frame or something and BUMP the key
you're also supposed to replace that bolt with a new one as it is a Torque to yield bolt. When I replaced the timing belt, i was 19 years old and had never done it before. Put it altogether and it cranked right up and was right on in timing. As a hint, use your timing belt cover as a guide to help you achieve Top Dead Center.

Re: Timing Belt Removal
the crankshaft sptrocket bolt came right off with a bosch 14.3 impact and a 7/8 socket but the sprocket and balancer are still on. is there a certain type of puller for this?

Re: Timing Belt Removal
I'm bumping this one. I too would like to know if there is a special crank/harmonic puller for this job. I spent all day today trying to get my pulley/harmonic off to no avail using heat and brute force. I went to the parts stores, and their 2/3 puller won't work ("diameter" just barely misses allowing all 3 claws to grab the backside of the pulley), and the 7 ton 3-claw is too big without also taking out the radiator and condensor. There was also a harmonic removal tool (slotted Y design with various bolts), but for the life of me, I couldn't see how it would work since there is no where to screw in those bolts on the inside of the pulley/harmonic (at least not where I can see). Perhaps the harmonic removal tool is the right tool, and if so, can somebody please offer up a quick lesson?
Thanks.
