Default Engine will not heat

I have a 99 with a 2.5 and the engine is cold constantly. Replaced 2 thermostats and still no luck. I'm reluctant to put in a 3rd. Any ideas???

I'm sure the coolant level is full and the thermostat only seem to fit a certain way. It's almost as if the water pump is running unsupervised...

r u telling this by the in dash guage or a manuel thermostat in ur radiator?

is your heater blowing hot?

how new is the coolant?

it is common to get a bad thermostat straight from the factory. what brand you get?

could be a bad waterpump not circulating the collant enough to get it into the radiator.

The dash gauge is all I have to go by but the heater blows ice cold. I was thinking maybe there could be a water pump problem but why would it be cold. The only thing I haven't considered is the placement of the sending unit for the dash gauge.

A worn out water pump will do this too. However the t-stat is more common. Pull the water pump and see if the impeller is rotted out to nothing.

If your water pump is shot, you'll typically have overheating issues because the water is not circulating through the system properly. Try this: Next time you've run your truck a good 10-15 minutes, go out and start feeling the hoses. They should be pretty warm. If not, there is circulation problem. Feel both the upper and lower radiator hose. One may be warm and the other may still be cold. This happens sometimes when the t-stat is stuck shut. Also, feel the lines that feed your heater core. Perhaps there is no circulation through the core, so there's no heat to blow from the heater.

If none of that help, turn the dial from blue to red (just kidding)

Well, my Ranger is a 1992 with a 2.3...however, I found that my thermostat was failed. I replaced it and now it heats great, I just don't have anything on the gauge. I have read that there is a blower dor that fails to open and keeps the heat from blowing in. You may do a search for blower door and see if it relates to our truck...there is a fix fo rit I rckon on that forum page...

A clogged heater core would not cause the whole engine to run cold. He's got a stuck open stat or a worn out impeller on the pump. You'd think a bad impeller would cause over heating but its oddly the opposite a lot of times. It circulates enough to keep it from overheating but not enough to properly flow throughout the system.

Hello, i have a 2003 ford ranger with the 4.0.... i did a coolant change as soon as i got it home and noticed it was dripping a few drips in a couple mins... drip......drip......drip, i felt the top rad hose and its hot but when i grabbed the bottom one its ice cold..... also when it has ran 45 mins to an hour the rad cap isnt hot.... just warm like "luke warm" and my thermostat in the truck only goes up 1/4 way and stops.... i shut it down and let it cool down and took the rad cap off (as advanced auto said you will see the coolant circulating if its working right) and nothing..... its just sitting there.... no bubbles in resivor, no white smoke, no milkyness in oil and no steam off motor compartment..... i have a pretty good feeling its the water pump seal on the output shaft... but while im in there replacing that im going to replace the tstat.... anyone else got any different idea? oh and theres no motor knock, shack, misfire no signs its any head problem.... im just scared from what i read about the 1200 bucks for the timing seal.... i hope to f-ing god its just the pump cuz thats what the garage said it was. oh and one more thing.. when i turn the heat on full bore its "luke warm" not hot and not cold.... and thats after running about an hour. please help!

Ok, i will look into it, i just dont want to take it all apart... replace the tstat, and have to take the parts back off and drain coolant for the 3rd time so i can replace the pump..... would it be smart to just replace both anyways.... god only knows how long its been since the pump was changed and im only gonna drain and refill the coolant a couple more times.... shits epencive here!! and the tstat wouldnt make it drip from the pump pulley... it only drips when its running
