Default NewBie here, with CEL... :-(

Whats up all?
PROUD new owner of a real nice, 2 owner 2000 Ranger XL, 2.5L 5 speed, 94K, nice truck.

Just got it, great deal, Been going through it, blah blah.

With previous owner, In SEPT 2010, for inspection, maintenance, etc the truck has new plugs, wires, air filter, tires, brakes, exhaust. Tons of new quality parts, and it shows, very clean shape.

Anyway, during my inspection I noticed that the gas cap hand grip is separated from the cap itself, 2 pieces if you will, it's done. Now I know this is not good, and plan to replace like yesterday, I am on it. Now, with that said, in hopes that is really all it is, today while running the truck and letting it idle in the driveway, it started kinda choking up and running a bit rough, I got in it, playing with the gas a bit, etc, then the CEL came on. I took it around the block a few times, check engine did not go out but it ran just like it has been for the past couple of days of ownership, no hesitation, misfire, nothing, just fine... I did notice a slight run away idle once or twice, possibly lean/code, etc???

I am a newbie to rangers but quite the home wrencher, so open ears. Is there an affordable home remedy/tool that can be acquired, recommended for CEL code pulls, etc that I should proactively get my hands on? Any feedback here on my issue?

Other than that runs like a German tank, this thing is gonna be around a while.

OH, and thx for havin' me...

change the gas cap

disconnect the batter for 10 min....reset the computer

drive it....see what happens

the code may be thrown because of the cap

Well, as an update:
Grabbed a new fuel cap off the shelf in Pep Boys(convenient)
Stopped by Auto Zone and took advantage of the free diag via their tool(Pep Boys needed an appt later), code pulled P0171, Fuel Trim Bank One...

Got home, pulled the battery, installed new cap, added fuel injection cleaner(Lucas baby) and some Mystery Oil to the Oil. Let sit for 30 min for a full reset, then started it up, no CEL, and did not come back on with about a 10-15 mile drive, fueled up on the cleaner(added 10 gallons), etc, etc...

Noticed a slight chop here or there, and a runaway idle twice while sitting at a light, etc. (lean?)

Should i just rock it for a bit and see if it cleans itself through, adjusts for a correct/new fuel cap, etc?
Possible injector issues/problems?

Thx FRF...

Not running that bad but hesitates here and there, little sputter and what not.

CEL came back on, p0171...

Possible MAF?

Alright, well no one has chimed up, been quiet.
I know the p0171 code is kinda generic, and points towards lean conditions on bank one, possible variables causing this, but again most all posted data is just a little bit of everything. So, even though the truck runs, something is not right and the OBD knows it.

So, guess what Daddy got today????
Yup, the ultimate bang for under $300, the Actron CP9580, GREAT Autoscanner...

Actron Shiz Nit

Gonna have some fun with this, pull some live fuel trim #'s, etc...
Already cleaned the MAF, no change, ran without the MAF, no change, same slight rough idle, and hesitation here and there, not much. Even better, the symptoms are beginning to diminish altogether, as I could not reproduce it tonight for my pops in law. I ran a half of tank through with 25gallon treatment of Lucas, so it may be a clogged/gummed injector. Curious to do the same thing a second run, use high octane fuel on top of the cleaner, etc and see where that leaves it. Looking forward to getting some code scans, seeing where fuel and air numbers are, injector pulse data, MAF and O2 sensor tests, good times...
I am also curious after I play around with the scanner, reset the OBD clear CEL and see if it even pulls the p0171 again.

Will report back shortly, of course if anyone gives a flyin' fugg...

I seems like that sometimes but it's okay, it's probably your injectors or maybe your throttle body is gummed up?

Sure thing; I'm following along with interest. I just have a $60 ultragauge for monitoring and working with codes. I prolly don't have the smarts to hold a $300 gauge. :-o

Well, this new code reader is just crazy, pulls data that you did not even know exists. LOL

Anyway, interpreting the diag info and making sense of it, cross examining it against FORD OEM data from the workshop manuals, etc, will post all the details if anyone wants that info from the tool reporting.

Anyway, as I continue to troubleshoot this p0171 code and periodic rough running I wanted to add a bit of info I just stumbled across, which I believe is totally relevant to my problem and hopefully one of you seasoned guru's will recognize, and hopefully be able to add some light here.

Noticed this morning that it is now almost impossible to get fuel in the truck, even when under a quarter of a tank it pops the nozzle every 2 to 4 seconds, took me almost 10 minutes to get $25 in it today.

So, with that said, I am pulling a p0171(lean code bank one) and have a new MAF on the way, as all points of resolution point towards the MAF. Anyway, is there something that stands out here as I cannot get fuel in the tank? Just acts like it is full, pops the gas nozzle right off as soon as you begin to pump. Something is NOT right...

Hmmmmm.....

Well, figured out the fuel filling issues, on my own.
It is the fuel filler neck, they go bad, break down, kink, leak, air/pressure issues, etc. That is exactly what it is. I have a new one on order and will replace it my self.

I KNOW the easiest way to replace this, does anyone else know? Or care to know? This is a forum response test, as this forum moves VERY slow on responses, it is always like this or just been a slow couple of days????

I know there is a bunch of Ford Ranger Forums and just want to make sure I am a part of the right one, I like to share tech info and receive it as well, with other enthusiasts who give a rats a$$...

haha, no doubt.
Gonna raise the bed to do it.

Correct me if I am wrong, but there are 4 torx bolts on the 6ft and 6 on the 7ft bed right??

That is pretty much it to free the bed, at least enough to just lift that side to do the filler neck?

That is, at least, what I have seemed to have read.
