Default Air Intake

Hey, does anybody have a home made air intake or a K&N or anything like that? I'm lookin to put a cold air intake on my 2.3 but I am not spending the amount of money for a K&N .... Does it really help that much for how much effort it is to make one/install one? I am also wanting to put a Cherry Bomb glass pack on it too? thought's? Concern's? Help me haha

I have no reason to flame. I'll just point out that he's wrong, has no actual basis for his pointless comments, and is unlikely to be able to backup anything he says. This is not a flame. Its simple fact. Just because someone doesn't like said fact doesn't make it a flame. I can predict his next comment already. He has one, and he can feel the difference. Which is physically impossible. Thereby completely disproving his own statement. Or he'll just say he read it somewhere else on another make/model vehicle that may actually benefit from it. Or "because the advertisement says so". Or "neh neh just because" and cite some non-existent law of physics. Whatever it is, it has all be heard before and all disproved. I find it amusing that his first post is this.

So, to the OP, you can do a search on here and read the overwhelming number of actual smart people who don't fall for a bunch of marketing BS. Read the posts. Read the dyno tests. Read the IAT senor readings. And make the smart decision, saving your money.

Or you can buy one based on the angry people with no data claiming they make impossible improvements.

So your scientific basis for performance increase is that "you can feel it in the way someone else drives some other unrelated vehicle". Enjoy wasting your money, not sure why you bothered to ask about it on here if you already made up your mind.

Wow. You'll go far here with that attitude towards people who help you when you ask for help. However, to your credit, that is a very original insult. Congrats.

I don't think he is being a dick... He's just trying to save you some money and time. You may claim to "feel" some more power in your engine... but it's a 2.3 small pick up truck... not a V8 Mustang.

My .02... Not tryying to stir the pot (although I don't car if I do)

dude its a fucking truck it doesnt need cold air intake. Cold air alone is a waste if you want to improve performance you gotta get all kinds of upgrades along with teh CAI to make any differance

you arent going to feel a difference. if you did massive amounts of modifications to the engine and fuel system as well as exhaust then yes a cold air intake could help ya out some, but we are talking thousands of dollars in upgrades to make anything worth while, and for that price you might as well drop in a V8, but hell if you want to, go ahead and waste your money on it.

Now now people...

The air intake system on your 2.3 is already a cold air intake, due to the location of the intake port from behind the air filter. If you are to take out your air filter, you will notice that the hole leads directly out behind your passenger side headlight, bringing in cold air from outside the vehicle. The only way you will feel a difference is if the inlet pipes where restrictive and by reworking the ducting you removed that restriction. Secondly for that to really work you would have to modify the exhaust system for it to be efficient.

If I may return to my inlet ducting point, there is no real restriction from the ducting, as it is a wide, direct link to the throttle body. From the 2.3, 3.0, and 4.0 engines the inlet's are all large and rather unrestrictive.

If you really want to improve performance, think about porting your heads or getting the engine balanced, but as stated earlier you are driving a 2.3L Ranger, not a 5.0L Mustang.

Yeah, and why you're at it buy some MAF cleaner, cause you're gonna need to clean your MAF every time you service that oil throwing K&N.

My $.02...

Just leave the air system as is, it is designed to be 100% efficient in its OEM state, period. There are NO restrictions in the Ford Ranger CAI, as is... Keep a good filter in there at all times, DONE...

Now see? wasnt that easy? You could have just said a better filter like techranger or the guy above him. You didnt have to be so harsh as saying dont do it completely it's a waste. Besides why would i listen to Fireranger anyway? His picture is a wrecked vehicle??
