Default 2.3 Tstat problem

Alright... So I replced my tstat and after I put it on I strted it up and it reached operating temp.. I also did some other things so before I left the garge I put the rest of my coolant in and mixed w water. Now my gauge in my truck stays cold but it does work.. So my gauge is working... I don't understnd y this happend and its happened to me 3 times already.. I looked up the installation up on alldata tht I have. acess to.... I don't undestand y it worked now it don't, I let warm up and loosend the radiator cap and let idle like that for a while nothing..I used a fail safe tstat...idk if the housing has a burr on it or something that's not letting it close all theway or wht idk... Help guys....

Sounds like it opened the first time and is stuck open now. Pull it off and give it a thorough exam, poke, prod, etc. Put it back and see if it works. If not, get a new one. Out of the box failures of t-stats is not uncommon.

You've done what three times? Had it warm up to operating temp and get stuck open?

the fail safe brand is junk i will say that now. they have a crappy design to them and they have little prongs that will get stuck the first time they arre used. i recommend taking it out cuttin off the little prongs and seeing if that works if not get a duralast one. i have it in my truck and it works great

This is another well vetted topic. Buy a motorcraft t-stat and then make sure you get the AIR out of the system.

Ghostz, I agree you do not always have to buy OEM product. I have a duralast VSS sensor in my diff. I have a 5 speed, if I had an Auto I would only put a Motorcraft VSS sensor in. That being said, IMHO for these trucks when recomending a tstat over the internet I will only suggest the Motorcraft. For example you have access to a professional Bleeder. 99% of the members do not. Some aftermarket t-stat don't have a bleeder. Rockauto has the MC for $11 plus $5 shipping.....if you need another part you could buy it at the same time and it could make the shipping insignificant......I think the duralasts are about $8

i'll agree with the above statement. in certain cases there are things i will always buy OEM stuff but for certain things i do mostly buy aftermarket.

sometimes it works sometimes it dont. its really a hit and miss.
i'v also had problems with OEM stuff. its common on rangers for the stock slave cylinder to go out since its plastic.
on the v10 triton my dad had the OEM manifolds were a bad design and always warped every 10k miles we bought aftermarket headers for it and BAM it never had a problem again.

another thing about aftermarket. if you get a good aftermarket brand (summit, duralast) they also usually have a decent or a lifetime warrenty which is nice if it goes bad.

Ive replaced the thermostat 3 times because it has done somewhat the same symptom every time.. I bought the fail safe from the parts store that i always go to and never really looked into it.. when i bought this one i realized it was the same one and since it has a warranty i just took it back and got my money back.. it could possibly be the thermostat tabs. And FireRanger yes it warmed up the first time operating temp. now it must be stuck open or not closing all the way since the top radiator hose gets firm.. So pretty much all you guys are saying is use a different thermostat?
