Hello all,
Last night while driving on the highway (65 mph), I heard what sounded like a belt that shredded, with some "slapping" or very fas ticking as if a part of the belt was slamming against engine parts.

Later the sound went away, and when coming to a stop, the engine stuttered and died. The engine idled rough for a few starts afterward, but now seems to be okay, other than chronic detonation when accelerating (regardless of octane use)

I thought it was the timing belt so I had it replaced. As it turns out, the belt was in okay shape, with no apparent damage. The outer serpentine belt is/was cracking, and so I replaced it too.

It passed a smog test here in California just a week or so ago. As well, no codes have been thrown.

What else would cause this "popping" sound and then apparently go away?

did you make sure nothing is touching? like the fan hitting the shroud or a hose hitting the serp belt or alt.
