Default overheating

hey guys, new here, but not to FORD.

i have a 05 ranger 2.3l with one fan, i only see the electric one, no others. it overheats with the a/c off, but when its on, the fan turns on and cools it down, but i do not use the a/c that much and i know something is wrong because the temp gauge is pegged and no fan on. i monitored the temps on a scanner and they got pretty high with the gauge staying centered (237 F). the pcm is not turning something on. any ideas or did a fan get taken out, (very doubtful) thanks

there is a sensor that turns on the fan, find out what one that is and replace it
