Default Advice Would Be Lovely!

Hello everyone!

As my signature says, I have myself a 1997 Mazda B2300 with 65,122 miles on it, and I am wondering what the best, and cheapest, way to get a little more power out of that 2.3l engine. I am a college student and as such, have little in the ways of disposable funds. So if anyone has any suggestions, or things to save up for that won't really break the 750-1k mark, that would be lovely!

Hmm... Well I just changed the plugs and wires and had thought to upgrade the air intake to a cold air, and do something about the exhaust... however I hear that headers leak far more often then a conventional exhaust manifold; what is the upkeep on headers look like?

Also, how does one go about porting the heads, and where would I find a better cam?

Thanks for letting me ask the stupid questions!

There are lots of performance parts for the 2.3L.
I'll post up some links to some nice sites that we used to use. Sorry, but can't get to them at the moment though.

I'm not too familar with the intake on that engine. But if it is anything like the 3.0 and 4.0, intake upgrades won't do anything without other hefty engine mods and accompanying exhaust mods.

What kind of spark plugs and wires?

Also upgrade yer distributor.

Exhaust will be good to do as well.

Headers leak? No.......

Carry yer heads to a machine shop and tell them you want them ported.
It allows better air flow- something a 2.3L needs. They grind out metal and make the exhaust ports/intake ports bigger.

Look up for "2.3L aftermarket cam".

Alright fellas, be nice!

@WildlandFirefighter: I am using NAPA wires with I believe autolite platinums, and my engine is the distributorless model. I'm going to upgrade the air filter shortly and am debating on getting the exhaust done too. The reason I asked about the headers leaking is because I asked my father, who was a mechanic for years, had told me that they where quite annoying to deal with, although the last time he had headers on a vehicle was in the mid 90's on his 1958 Apache.

I'll start hunting for a machine shop though, thanks for the advice!.
