Default noise from vehicle after new shocks

I replaced my shocks all the way around and after about a week or so I began hearing a noise. It changes with vehicle speed and almost sounds like a bearing. also, how much play should the driveshaft have in it? 1997 ford ranger two wheel 2.3

Well I had the truck up on jackstands and was inspecting the u-joints and there doesn't seem to be any play in them. I was turning the driveshaft while the truck was in neutral and there was atleast 3 inches I could turn the driveshaft before the rear wheel would turn. While I had it up on the stands, I spun the wheels and didnt really here anything abnormal, but the right front wheel had some play in it, meaning I could move it slightly in and out. I am positive the lugnuts are torqued properly because I torqued them with a torque wrench. I have neverserviced any bearings for the wheels on the vehicle and it has 140K on it. I can't tell where the kinda whining noise is coming from. while I had it on the stands I ran it through the gears and i don't think I noticed any noise. (all the wheels were elevated so the front weren't turning of course). I am just not sure. Do you think I should just start by replacing the front bearings?

----------

oh and the noise gets louder at higher speeds and at no other time like turning or anything

When you move your wheel, what direction does it move in? If you grab the forward and aft part of the tire and push and pull does it move in and out laterally? If so, I would look at a tie rod end as the most likely suspect.

If you grab the top of the tire and push back and forth, does it move vertically? If so, I would look at a ball joint.

If it moves in all directions, it's probably a wheel bearing.

This is with the vehicle up on a jack stand of course.

From what I remember it moves in all directions...and now come to the think of it...the truck has started pulling to the right when I stop...the brakes are not that old...maybe 15K miles on them...I just keep thinking the bearings...

That sounds like bearings to me as well.

the noise was coming from the center support bearing on the driveshaft...

I feel so stupid not realizing this could be the issue....but I guess this a common problem on two piece drivaxles...in 98 they changed them to one piece driveshafts...I was going to do that to my truck but it was cheaper to change the center mount bearing and I couldn't even locate a driveshaft from any local salvage yards...
