Default Bad starter with a twist

I believe my starter or battery just took a shit. When I try and turn the engine over, all I get is click click click (very quickly) and then a little bit of smoke starts to come off of the battery's positive terminal. I tried jumping it with my car, but nothing changed. So its either the starter, or something happened to my battery. All radio resets are in place, so I haven't lost all power. Any ideas?

That sounds like a bad connection on your battery terminal.

smoke is a sign of heat, high amperage will make heat. Solenoid sounds like its working, so im guessing the starter is messed up, and its trying to draw in too much current now to crank over.

I am going to get the battery tested in the AM. If its good, looks like I'll be installing a starter tomorrow. Is there a DIY for this? I am sure its simple, but they're always good to look at first.

Starters are simple. Three mounting bolts and a nut for the starter and a nut for the solenoid. Just make sure you disconnect the battery first.

Should I replace the solenoid too? Or try it without and get it if needed?

Side note, my battery produces corrosion. This became an issue once in the past. The truck wouldn't start, and I had to clean the terminals. This was the first thing I tried today, but obviously, it didn't work.

Well, it was two things. The battery, and a shit ton of corrosion on the cables. I had to cut a couple inches off of the cables and replace the terminal ends. Tip top now.

To answer your question about the starter, you can only replace the starter and starter solenoid as a unit...you can't buy them separate.
